June is Adopt-a-Cat Month, so it's the purrfect time to open your hearts and home to a new feline friend!
Here are some helpful tips you should know when adopting a new furry family member:
- Organize a safe room to make your new cat feel at home. Choose a small, confined space like a spare bedroom or bathroom. Make sure the room is free of strings, ribbons, or small objects that can be swallowed. Also, make sure there are no poisonous plants, flowers, or electrical cords. If you have blinds, make sure to tie up the cords!
- Stock up on supplies you will need. This list should include food and water bowls, litter box (placed away from food and water), scratching post, cozy cat bed or tower, and lots of interactive toys!
- To help your new cat relax, you can try pheromone sprays or diffusers. Cats love hideouts that are warm, quiet, and enclosed. Try a cardboard box with a blanket, drape a sheet over a chair, clear out space in the corner of a closet. Lastly, place a t-shirt with your scent in the room to help kitty get to know you!
- When ready to introduce your new cat to the family, start with short visits. If you have small children in the house, talk to them about the importance of being gentle and respecting your new cat's space. If you have other pets in the house, have the other pets spend time in the "safe room", and allow your new cat to explore the house alone. Go very slowly in 15-20 minute intervals to allow an easy adjustment!
